Case Study: Reedy Creek Gas Power Plan

Clarke Energy was appointed to build a power station in Central Queensland for a coal seam
gas plant. In order to back up their power station, they required two generators to act as a prime power source during the construction of the station (which consisted of 10 x 3 MW gas engine
generators sets once it was fully functional).

OBJECTIVES

  • Synchronised generators that will come into action whenever required, in the case of an outage.
  • Generators to be used on prime power for 6 months and be converted to stand-by black
    start solution afterward.
  • A controlled sound level, meeting Australian noise requirements.

SOLUTION

CAPS engineered a solution, comprising two synchronised KX1100 Kohler generators equipped with MTU engines, which were also synchronised with the power station itself to enable it to restart in the case of a blackout.

A unique, customised control panel was installed, working to synchronise the two generators together and the plant at the same time. The noise level had been reduced to 75 dBA (@ 7 metres) by using a super silent canopy, equipped with 50 mm sound foam and a residential exhaust silencer.

BENEFITS

Meeting the customer’s needs for a cost-effective solution, the generators effectively acted as a prime power source during their primary six months of use and also proved a strong backup solution thereafter.
