Following independent testing, the Class 0 certifications of oil-free centrifugal and rotary air compressor technologies by Ingersoll Rand (IR) have recently been updated to comply with the ISO 8573-1 Class 0 2010 standard. Class 0 is the most stringent class of air quality and certifies that the air discharged by the compressor is free of added oil aerosols, vapours and liquids.
In 2007, Ingersoll Rand was the first manufacturer in the world to be certified Class 0 for centrifugal air compressors. According to Dino Alessio, leading Rotary Screw Compressor engineer at Compressed Air and Power Solutions Australia (CAPS), recertification to the 2010 revision of the Class 0 standard demonstrates Ingersoll Rand’s leadership in complying with the latest technical standards in the industry. “The rigorous tests performed shows our commitment to providing best-in-class equipment for our customers,” said Alessio.
The updated certifications were granted to the entire range of Ingersoll Rand air-cooled and water-cooled oil-free rotary screw compressors (37 to 350 kW) and water-cooled, oil-free centrifugal compressors (160 to 5,000 kW) by TÜV Rheinland®, a global leader in independent testing and assessment services.

Oil-free compressors not only provide purer air, but save customers time and money while improving their productivity. They reduce maintenance costs by minimising the need for lubricating oil, inline filters and oil/air separator components. “Ingersoll Rand’s oil-free rotary screw and centrifugal air compressors are also helping manufacturers comply with environmental standards such as ISO 14001 and EU regulations,” added Alessio.
Contaminated air can spoil and ruin products, creating significant losses of revenue and customer trust. IR oil-free technology can help reduce these risks by providing pure air, free from additional contaminants. Oil-free air compressors also minimise downtime associated with cleaning filters and other air system components.
Reduced levels of contaminants also help air system components last longer and ensure higher overall product quality.
