Procal is a family owned fresh milk and dairy manufacturer. Their milk is sourced from local farms and produced in a state of the art facility in Melbourne.
In yoghurt packaging, gas is often applied to the vapour space of the containers in order to control their composition. This process, called blanketing, greatly improves process safety, product quality and equipment longevity.
Nitrogen is the most commonly used gas for blanketing because it is inert, widely available and relatively cost-effective depending on the source of supply. Marky Makalanda, Operations Manager at Procal Dairies Pty Ltd, had found from previous experience that using a nitrogen generation system was far more cost effective than using bottled nitrogen.

Personnel from CAPS visited Procal Dairies’s manufacturing facility and noticed that their existing compressed air system had surplus capacity that could go towards an on-site nitrogen generation system.
After a thorough on-site audit, CAPS found out that the system requirement for a Nitrogen Generator was 9.2Nm3/hr at 99.5% Nitrogen purity with a storage tank.
Based on the site requirements, CAPS recommended and supplied Procal Dairies Pty Ltd with the following equipment.
Marky MakalandaThe nitrogen generator system installed by CAPS was a cost-effective and reliable solution that has given us no problems.
The nitrogen generation system supplied by CAPS came at a considerably low investment to Procal, especially considering they had no need to purchase an air compressor system. Opting for on-site nitrogen generation as opposed to using bottled nitrogen will ultimately allow Procal to achieve long-term savings between 40-80%, depending on current bottled nitrogen prices.
